action

A big New Year's Eve show is recorded in a large television studio just outside Madrid four months before the turn of the year. Alternating between singing and dancing, the moderation and enthusiastic reactions from the audience are choreographed and filmed. An extra is killed in an accident, and the unemployed actor José is ordered to the location by his agent to replace him as soon as possible. Access to the television studio is difficult as hundreds of employees at the television station have previously been laid off and there are raging street battles with police around the studio. Once in the studio, José and no one else can go out. José takes up his extra position as a public guest, and he is presented with a surreal picture: The recordings have been going on for weeks, and the hundreds of other guests have been waiting in the studio for just as long and have to clap and cheer on command over and over again. As a result, several storylines unfold, which cross again and again due to the limited space of the studio.

José gets to know his table neighbors, including the attractive Paloma, with whom he unexpectedly gets closer during the breaks. In the background, the unscrupulous producer Benítez is struggling with the jealousies of his two stars, the aging potty singer Alphonso and the teen idol Adanne, who both claim the attractive performance spot just before the midnight gong. Alphonso and Adanne's agent will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. At the same time, Raphael's life is threatened by his agent and son Yuri, who hired the hit man Óscar to kill his hated father; the mentally disturbed Óscar is a big fan of Alphonso's songs. The career of the promiscuous Adanne, in turn, is threatened by a female groupie who got his semen through oral sex in Adanne's dressing room and is now keeping it in a bottle. Adanne's agent goes on a hunt for this vial to save his boss's career. In subplots, the two presenters of the show fight each other, and the unit manager learns during the filming that she too should be fired and defends herself against it. In the end, all the storylines lead to a happy ending for almost everyone involved.

criticism

From 16 aggregated ratings, My Big Night on Rotten Tomatoes achieved a value of 88%. JR Jones sums up the film for the Chicago Reader in the formula "half glamor, half chaos" and describes it as "extravagant" and "wild farce". Andy Webster found for the New York Times that de la Iglesia juggled the entire storyline skillfully, and drew parallels with the work of Pedro Almodóvar . In the trade journal Variety , Ben Kenigsberg praised the film as a "successful, grotesque farce" that slowly builds up and gushes over at the end. Film editor Domingo Gonzalez is responsible for ensuring that My Big Night maintains a clear line and a high tempo despite the confusing storylines. He criticized some clichéd representations. In the liner notes for the Fantasy Filmfest 2016, My Big Night was described as the "blackest backstage satire of all time"; the film mixes "a pinch of Almodovar, a touch of Fellini and maximum cynical industry criticism". Reviews almost unanimously pointed out that the Spanish singer Raphael satirized himself in the role of Alphonso.

At the Feroz Awards , My Big Night won an award in the “Best Supporting Actor” category from four nominations. The film was nominated for the Goya in four categories, but won none.
