history

The river was already known to the indigenous people of the Caiapó .

Lured by an imperial decree, which guaranteed ten years of tax exemption for those who settled uninhabited land in the interior, in 1836 the captain Francisco Joaquim Vilela and his son José Manuel Vilela and some companions crossed the Paranaíba river near Santa Rita do Paranaiba (today Itumbiara ) and penetrated into the unknown wilderness, up to a large river called "Rio Claro", the pioneers followed the Paranaíba River. On Ribeirão Ariranha (otter creek) they excluded from the country. In the same year they returned to Minas Gerais . In the following year Jose Manuel Vilela and his servants returned and settled there permanently.
