Rivals , full title Rivals - Two Brothers: A Cop… a Bank Robber , is a French crime film by Jacques Maillot from 2008. The film was broadcast on German television under the title Uneven Brothers .

action

Lyon in 1979: François is a police officer and lives alone after his wife and child have separated. His brother Gabriel was sentenced to ten years in prison for a murder and is now about to be released. For the sake of his seriously ill father, who raised a total of four siblings alone, François agrees to support Gabriel in his first steps in freedom. He found him work in a supermarket through a relative of his ex-wife and lets him stay at his house. In fact, Gabriel initially seems to get his life under control. He wants to live honestly, gets involved in his new job as a crate packer and meets the cashier Nathalie in the supermarket. Both become a couple. François, in turn, falls in love with Corinne, the wife of the criminal José, whom François himself put behind bars. At first she reacts negatively, but later meets with François and the two also become a couple.

Gabriel wants to get down to earth with his cell mate Paulo. After verbal approval, they begin to renovate a dilapidated snack bar. You dream of opening a small business here. When the shop was completely renovated, their contact refused to use it, as there were complaints about the two convicts. Angry, both of them light the snack. Despite his poor financial situation, Gabriel refuses to work with his former cronies. However, he separates from Nathalie, would it be better for her. When his ex-wife Monique demands alimony from a lawyer , Gabriel finally accepts an assignment. He shoots four men who stood in the way of another gang.

François has meanwhile decided to live with Corinne. She agrees and separates from her husband José while visiting prison. He swears revenge - shortly afterwards two of his relatives are standing in front of Corinne's door to take their little daughter Valentine with them. In desperation, Corinne throws herself on a table with glasses and is seriously injured and taken to the hospital. François brings Valentine to safety with Corinne's grandparents.

Gabriel realizes that he doesn't want to be without Nathalie. He confesses his love to her and makes her a marriage proposal, which she accepts. The brothers spend Christmas with their other siblings and their father. Gabriel brought many presents with him, the money supposedly coming from horse racing. While Gabriel is partying, the supermarket he works in is raided. Employees recognize Gabriel's accomplices, so that it soon becomes clear that Gabriel must be connected to the break-in, in which the daily income was stolen. He is arrested but released when nothing can be proven. François has had enough: he throws Gabriel out. Since he can no longer work as a police officer in Lyon, he is transferred to Annecy . He moves in with Corinne. The relationship with his brother is so bad that he doesn't even show up at Nathalie's wedding. It was only months later that the brothers reconciled when Gabriel asked François to be the godson of his newborn daughter. By then, Gabriel had already built up a new, lucrative and illegal business: he and his ex-wife Monique run a brothel where women are illegally employed. Business is doing so well that more stores are opening in Annecy, among others. Prostitutes who are ancestral in the area are threatened and beaten up, whereupon François learns about the houses and begins to investigate. He suspects that his brother could be involved in the matter. At the same time he fears for the safety of Corinne, who is threatened by José. José has also issued death threats against François, which is why Gabriel plans to move José out of the way to protect his brother. François, on the other hand, resigns from the police force when he learns that Gabriel is to be arrested the next day for running the brothel. He calls Gabriel but says nothing. Gabriel suspects François and becomes suspicious, but does not flee. The next morning, Gabriel is arrested and tells the police about the danger François is in. After briefly researching José, the police go to see François, who, however, has already been shot down by José and dies in Gabriel's arms.
