The Rivière Yamaska is a right tributary of the Saint Lawrence River in the south of the Canadian province of Quebec .
The 154 km long river drains an area of 4843 km². Its name comes from the Abenaki language . It can be translated as "where the rushes grow" and refers to the marshland at the mouth.
The source of the river is in Lac Brome , a lake in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains . The Yamaska initially flows westward. Shortly after Farnham , it makes a striking 90 ° bend and then flows north through the flat plain of the Saint Lawrence Valley. Near the village of Pierreville , the river finally flows into Lac Saint-Pierre , which forms part of the stream. One kilometer northeast of the mouth of the Yamaska is that of the Rivière Saint-François .
The catchment area of Yamaska is one of the agricultural province used most intense regions, which is why the burden of fertilizer is higher than average.
