Robert William Duncan Junior (born July 5, 1948 in Fort Dix , Bordentown , New Jersey ) is an American bishop . He is a former Anglican Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America . From 2009 to 2014 he was a primate of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).

Life

After attending the Bordentown Military Institute , Robert Duncan did his Bachelor of Arts Cum laude at Trinity College in Hartford in 1970 , and in 1973 the Doctor and Master of Divinity honoris causa at the General Theological Seminary in New York (together with Gene Robinson ) and studied Scottish in the meantime History at the University of Edinburgh . On April 22, 1972, he became a deacon ordained and received on October 28, 1973 his ordination . His first positions were at the Chapel of the Intercession in New York City, at Grace Church in Merchantville , New Jersey and briefly at Christ Church in Edinburgh . From 1974 to 1978 he served as deputy dean at the major seminary. He spent the next four years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as Assistant Rector. From 1982 he served 10 years as the rector of St. Thomas Parish in Newark . In 1990 he was a candidate for Episcopal Bishop of Colorado. The Conservative Bishop of Pittsburgh Alden Moinet Hathaway made him canon and coadjutor in 1995. On September 13, 1997, Duncan was ordained bishop by Edmond Lee Browning , Alden Moinet Hathaway and Peter James Lee and was consecrated for the 7th time as successor to Alden Moinet Hathaway .Bishop of Pittsburgh of the Episcopal Church.

Duncan quickly became the head of a group of conservative evangelical bishops within the Episcopal Church. He expressed criticism of the ordination of the homosexual bishop Gene Robinson . After Robinson's bishopric election was confirmed in 2003, Duncan, speaking to a group of conservative bishops and lay people, expressed his regret at a press conference. In 2004 Duncan became leader of the Anglican Communion Network , a theologically conservative action group that advocates realignment of Anglican dioceses and parishes.

On January 15, 2008, a letter from the House of Bishops alleged that Duncan had given up communion with the Church. In a letter dated March 14, Duncan denied the allegations against which he was charged. On September 18, 2008, he was deposed as bishop. Immediately afterwards he became bishop in the Iglesia Anglicana del Cono Sur de América . The majority of his diocese of Pittsburgh followed their bishop and resigned from the Episcopal Church of the United States of America and joined the Iglesia Anglicana del Cono Sur de América. Thus, the Diocese of Pittsburgh split. On November 7, 2008, Duncan was re-elected bishop of this new diocese of Pittsburgh, which in 2009 became part of the Anglican Church of North America. On June 21, 2009, the bishops of the Anglican Church in North America elected him archbishop and primate , making him head of that church. It was installed at Christ Church in Plano , Texas on June 25, 2009 . Conservative Anglicans from developing countries were represented at the ceremony by Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi , Archbishop of the African Anglican Province of Kenya .

Duncan married on August 16, 1969 and has a daughter, Nara Elizabeth Dewar.
