Robert Foster "Bob" Bennett (born September 18, 1933 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † May 4, 2016 in Arlington County , Virginia ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He represented the state of Utah in the US Senate from 1993 to 2011 .

Life

Bennett was born in Salt Lake City in 1933. He was the son of Frances Marion Grant and Senator Wallace F. Bennett . His grandfather, Heber J. Grant, was the seventh President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . Bennett studied at the University of Utah after leaving school and received a bachelor's degree in political science in 1957 . From 1957 to 1969, Bennett served as the Chaplain of Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ in the Army National Guard .

From 1974 he worked as a public relations manager at Howard Hughes ' Summa Corporation . From 1978 he was President of Osmond Communications , from 1979 Chairman of American Computers Corporation and from 1981 to 1984 President of Microsonics Corporation . From 1984 until he took office as a US Senator, he was CEO of Franklin Quest , a manufacturer of organizers .

Bennett had been married to Joyce McKay since 1962 and had six children with her.

Political career

Bennett was elected to the US Senate in 1992 to succeed Jake Garn , who did not run after four terms. It was confirmed in 1998 and 2004, respectively. During the 106th Congress he was deputy to the Whip of the then Republican majority faction, Mitch McConnell . After losing the majority of the Republicans in the Senate in 2007, Bennett continued to work as an advisor to McConnell, who has now risen to parliamentary position .

Bennett's Senate seat was up for election again in November 2010 as planned. However, he reached in May 2010 at the Utah Republican Congress in the election to determine two candidates who should compete against each other in a primary, only the third place and thus left the Congress in January 2011; he was succeeded by Mike Lee .

Positions

Bennett was a staunch opponent of abortion and voted against a law that would have made social benefits available to same-sex partners of federal employees. He spoke out against the introduction of quotas for women and ethnic minorities.
