Robert Friedl

Robert Friedl (born June 2, 1963 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian saxophonist ( soprano saxophone , alto saxophone , clarinet ) and composer.

Life

Friedl began a classical clarinet training in 1974, which led to a first prize in the 1981 national competition Jugend musiziert . He began studying clarinet at the Mozarteum in Salzburg at the age of 16 and graduated in 1987 with a diploma as a concert clarinetist . Then he studied music education. As a classical clarinetist, he performed with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and at orchestral concerts in England, Canada and Italy.

Friedl came into contact with improvisational world and jazz music during his studies. He studied saxophone at the Vienna Jazz Conservatory and attended numerous workshops a. a. at Sal Nistico , Bill Dobbins and Herbie Hancock . With the Robert Friedl Quartet he received the second soloist prize at the second international jazz competition in Mauterndorf .

Working with Alegre Corrêa aroused his interest in intercultural music. The album Tiki ti Tiki was created in the mid-1990s with the African-Oriental world music group Kakilambe ; With the Brazilian guitarist Pedro Tagliani Friedl recorded the album Duets in 2002 .

As a member of several Austrian big bands such as the Austrian Jazzorchestra (under the direction of Erich Kleinschuster ), the Lee Harper Little Big Band and the group Nouvelle Cuisine , he completed international tours. He is lead saxophonist of the Lungau Big Band and the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra (album Deference to Anton Bruckner ) and a member of the international Jazz Big Band Graz ( Urban Folktales , 2011).

Friedl appeared as a sideman with musicians such as Diane Schuur , Toninho Horta , Ray Charles , Randy Brecker , Bob Mintzer , Bobby Shew and Slide Hampton .

Friedl is also active as a composer. He was involved as a big band composer and arranger on albums such as Soulmiles , The Monk's Progress and Thomas Bernhard Groovt . In 2006 the music for the musical Nannerls Traumreise was created . With the 4 Sketches for Trombone Quartet a classical musical work was created for the first time.
