Live and act

Robert Henderson was the son of Walter and Janet Henderson, b. Eadie, born. At the age of 16 , he enrolled at the University of Toronto , from which he received his Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 1891 as the best in his class . He stayed a year as a fellow at his university, then left academia and in 1892 was employed by the Government Insurance Department in Ottawa . From 1897 until his retirement in 1936, he worked for the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States . From 1903 to 1911 he was assistant actuary there, since 1911 actuary , 1920 to 1929 he was second vice president and 1929 to 1936 vice president.

Henderson worked in actuarial science , particularly life insurance , death rates, and interpolation . He advised the director of the United States Census Bureau and in 1915 the Episcopal Church of the United States of America on the creation of its pension fund . He founded the Robert Henderson Fund and bequeathed American Mathematical Society and two people the proceeds of his estate of about 4000 US dollars annually. After the death of the last co-heir in 1961, the American Mathematical Society received all of the capital for its endowment fund.

On December 30, 1924, he gave the Gibbs Lecture and in 1930 he became an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Toronto.

In July 1896 he married Anna Magee.
