Robert Edward Lory (born December 29, 1936 in Troy , New York ) is an American horror , science fiction , and fantasy author.

Life

Lory is the son of Edward and Dorothy Lory. He studied history and social sciences at Harpur College in Binghamton , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1961 . In 1964 he completed a Famous Writers Course and in 1973 a course from the Washington School of Art . After completing his studies, he worked as a folksinger , industrial photographer , did advertising and public relations for an electricity and gas supply company, carried out sales promotion for a supplier and supervised publications for the Reynolds Metals Company . From 1967 he worked for the Exxon Corporation , first as editor of the magazines Esso Manhattan , Exxon Manhattan and Esso Eastern Review , then as PR consultant for Esso Eastern Inc. Since 1968 Lory is married to Barbara Banner, with whom he has four children. He has been a freelance writer since 1971.

In 1963, Lory published his first SF short story Rundown in Worlds of If , followed by other stories that were collected in A Harvest of Hoodwinks in 1970 . In 1969 a first fantasy novel appeared, The Eyes of Bolsk , which was followed in 1970 by the sequel Master of the Etrax .

The nine-volume series Return of Dracula , a mixture of action thriller and horror novel, tells the adventures of the wealthy professor Damien Harmon, telekinetically gifted and paralyzed as a victim of a crime, who is now waging a vigilante campaign against the crime, in which he turns to help of the immortal Count Dracula , whom he forces to help with an implanted wooden stake. Supported by Cameron Sanchez, an expert in martial arts , and the shapeshifter Ktara, various super villains are hunted down and their infernal plans foiled. A large part of the volumes appeared in German translation in the Vampir-Taschenbuch series of the Pabel-Verlag .

Another novel cycle is Horrorscope , in which an overpowering being - demon or embodied fate - brings the zodiac signs to life and brings horrific misfortune and death to innocent people.

According to the lexicon of horror literature , both series are “pure pulp horror for the mass market”. Lory's science fiction is described by John Clute as "mainly light, fantasy-mixed adventure stories, undemanding but neat".

Under the publishing pseudonym Paul Edwards Lory wrote several volumes of the novel series John Eagle, Expeditor (German Protoagent John Eagle ), a series of semi-utopian agent thrillers.

For a very long time after 1976 no publications by Lory have been recorded. Ragnarok was only released in 2014 ! , a novel against the backdrop of Germanic mythology.
