Ev Grüger (born April 10, 1928 in Altenburg , Thuringia ; † November 9, 2017 ) was a German artist who had lived freelance in Hofheim am Taunus since 1958 and who "didn't give a damn about fashions or current art trends throughout her life " Has.

Life

Signature Ev Grüger, 1962

From 1942 to 1944 Grüger attended the master school for the textile industry in Plauen im Vogtland , which, like all art schools, was closed in 1944. Ev Grüger then had to work in an armaments factory until the end of the war . She then studied at the University of Fine Arts in Weimar until 1949 . There she attended courses with Otto Herbin for painting and Hans van Breek for sculpture . In 1951, Grüger decided to leave the GDR and go to Berlin in order to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin from 1951 to 1957 , taking courses with Hans Uhlmann ( wire sculpture ) and with Kurt- Hermann Kühn (wall painting) proved. In the end she studied for nine semesters with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff , whose master class she became. During one of her visits to Berlin, Hanna Bekker vom Rath discovered Ev Grüger's textile work and "lured" the artist to Hofheim, where she settled as a freelance artist from 1958.

Memberships

Grüger had been a member of the Darmstadt Secession since 1974 and took part in many of the artist group's annual exhibitions. At the old age of over 80, Grüger joined the Nonagon painter group .

plant

Grüger left behind an extensive work that is characterized by "formal rigor" and "meticulous painting style", which also makes the individual work unmistakable through "a very idiosyncratic manner and conception".

Although nude drawing and portraiture were part of her artistic training, Grüger largely dispensed with the representation of people in her works, which gives the scenery in her works both an objective validity and an apocalyptic perspective. In this way "sadness and loneliness" conquered the picture scene, with which "joy" was rarely contrasted. "Landscapes that seem threatening or threatened and deserted" became Grüger's "trademarks".

Subjects / subjects

In her early pictures the artist dealt "with abstract forms that are reminiscent of technical devices ". During this time he also made "drawings that thematize still lifes and landscapes ", these "show the detailed composed subject detached from its surroundings."

Nature, such as trees, often appear in Grüger's pictures in winter, bare, burned or in strictly protected shelters. Grüger used picture titles very sparingly, but if they were used, they were often used to criticize the overexploitation of nature : ' Garbage dump ,' clear-cutting ',' edge zone 'or' nature conservation 'are the names of some of the pictures that address the topic of the destruction of nature . Grüger had a pronounced ability to see three-dimensionally; She artfully incorporated her interest in architecture into her compositions . These skills have given rise to both representational and "abstract but not abstract" compositions of high quality.

techniques

Grüger worked with various techniques: She mastered pencil , colored pencil , charcoal , ink and graphite drawing , worked in watercolor and oil and used woodcut , screen printing and offset lithography . Textile works and collages of her have also survived, and in old age Grüger also turned to caricature . Grüger's photographic work, which is currently being developed, is virtually unknown to the public .

Evaluation of the work

Reasons for the Stadtmuseum Hofheim am Taunus to take over the estate of Grüger - regardless of the limited spatial capacities - are "quality and originality of the work" and the artist's "value for money and innovative strength".
