Robert Payne

Pierre Stephen Robert Payne (born December 4, 1911 in Cornwall ; † March 3, 1983 ) was a British writer (novels, biographies, non-fiction).

Live and act

Payne was born in Cornwall, England, to an English father and a French mother. As a young man, he traveled to the countries of the Far East for many years, an experience that was later incorporated into his books many times. He then worked temporarily as a ship builder and in the British financial administration. During the Second World War he worked as an armaments officer and senior officer of the British secret service in Singapore .

For his literary works Payne used the pseudonyms Richard Cargoe , John Anthony Devon , Howard Horne , Valentin Tikhonov and Robert Young ; he published his non-fiction books under his own name. His complete works include more than 110 works. His greatest successes were his numerous biographical studies of famous personalities; including u. a. Alexander the Great , Charlie Chaplin , Winston Spencer Churchill , Fyodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski , Greta Garbo , Mahatma Gandhi , Adolf Hitler , Ivan the Terrible , Lenin , George C. Marshall , Karl Marx , Albert Schweitzer , William Shakespeare , Josef Stalin , Sun Yat- sen , and Leon Trotsky .
