Robert Pfleger (born July 15, 1906 in Berlin , † October 19, 1971 in Bamberg ) was a German chemist , pharmaceutical entrepreneur and founder .

life and work

In 1924, after graduating from high school in Steglitz , Robert Pfleger began studying chemistry at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . Together with his lifelong friend Ernst Boris Chain , he was a student of Max Bodenstein , Herbert Freundlich , Fritz Haber , Walther Nernst , Robert Pschorr , Wilhelm Schlenk , Otto Warburg and Fritz Micheel . In 1929 Pfleger completed his studies with a doctorate and worked until 1931 as a research assistant at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry .

Until 1938 he worked as a research assistant at the Dresden pharmaceutical company Gehe & Co. AG, as operations manager and head of the scientific department of the Berlin company Dr. Oehren & Co., as a research assistant at the Chemical Institute of the Charité and at the Pharmacological Institute of the Berlin University and most recently as a chemist at the Berlin company Krienitz & Co. In 1938, Pfleger became self-employed as a pharmaceutical chemist.

After his service in the Wehrmacht , he fled to Bamberg with his wife and three children and built his pharmaceutical company Dr. R. Pfleger up. In 1945 and 1946 Pfleger was also a lecturer at the University of Erlangen and the Philosophical-Theological University of Bamberg . After Pfleger had completed his habilitation in autumn 1946 with the thesis "New Paths in Arsenic Therapy", he had been a private lecturer at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Erlangen from June 1947 and was appointed professor there in 1958.

In a will of July 19, 1970, Robert Pfleger ordered the establishment of the Doctor Robert Pfleger Foundation , which was then established on September 24, 1974. Since then, she has been the owner of all of Pfuer's companies; A large part of the income goes to charitable enterprises, serves to promote scientific research and finances the endowment of the Robert Pfleger research award .

Robert Pfleger is the father of the German chess grandmaster Helmut Pfleger .
