Robert Webster (water diver)

Robert David Webster (born October 25, 1938 in Berkeley , California ) is a former American water diver who was twice Olympic champion in high diving .

He won his first college competition when he was in a college in California that didn't have a swimming facility. After his victory, he moved to Michigan, where he was able to train with Bruce Harlan and Dick Kimball .

At the 1959 Pan American Games , Webster won the bronze medal. In Rome at the 1960 Olympic Games , he won the diving competition in front of his compatriot Gary Tobian , who had become Olympic champion in jumping four days earlier .

After his Olympic victory, Webster was trained by Samuel Lee . In 1963 he was the first American to win a double victory in art and high diving at the Pan American Games. In Tokyo at the Olympic Games in 1964 , he only competed in diving. He won gold in front of Klaus Dibiasi , making him the second diver after Samuel Lee to become Olympic champion on the tower twice.

After his career, Webster worked as a trainer at various universities. In 1970 he was inducted into the hall of fame of international swimming . In 1971 he looked after the US team at the Pan American Games.
