Harold Smith (diver)

Edwin Harold "Dutch" Smith (born February 19, 1909 in Ontario , California , † March 5, 1958 in La Jolla , California) was an American diver .

Harold Smith started for the Los Angeles Allied Athletic Club . In addition to Smith, Fred Cady's training group included brothers John and Michael Galitzen and Georgia Coleman . Smith won four AAU championships on the one-meter board and three-meter board.

At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , Smith took fourth place from the three-meter board behind his fellow countrymen Pete Desjardins and Michael Galitzen and the Egyptian Farid Simaika . Four years later, the Los Angeles jumpers dominated the 1932 Olympics in their hometown. Michael Galitzen won over Smith from the three-meter board, and Smith won from Galitzen from the ten-meter tower. In the women's category, Georgia Coleman also won gold and silver medals.

After his career, Smith worked as a trainer before serving as a captain in the Marine Corps during World War II . After the war he worked as a pool manager in luxury hotels. Smith was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979, 21 years after his death from cancer .
