Baden Powell (1971)

Baden Powell de Aquino , Baden Powell for short (born August 6, 1937 in Varre-Sai , state of Rio de Janeiro ; † September 26, 2000 in Rio de Janeiro , state of Rio de Janeiro) was one of the most important Brazilian guitarists and a pioneer of bossa Nova . Powell and his mentor Vinicius de Moraes composed more than 50 bossa nova and afro samba melodies, including classics such as Berimbau , Consolação (both 1963), or Canto de ossanha (1966), one of Elis Regina's greatest hits.

Life

Baden Powell was the son of Lino de Aquino and his wife Adelina. The father, who played the violin and guitar, was an avid boy scout and therefore named his son after Robert Baden-Powell . Baden Powell began playing guitar at the age of seven, studied classical guitar until he was fourteen and graduated from the Conservatory in Rio de Janeiro. At fifteen he was a professional musician, at twenty he began to compose successfully.

In the 1950s he founded a successful quartet with the pianist Antônio Carlos Jobim and the guitarists Luiz Bonfá and João Gilberto .

His father Lino, his guitar teacher Jaime Florence and the poets Vinícius de Moraes and Paulo Cesar Pinheiro were important for his musical development . They were the creators of well-known Brazilian songs that are now classics. His greatest compositional contribution were the "Afro Sambas " , composed in 1966 with Vinícius de Moraes, whom Baden Powell met in 1958 .

The German jazz author and music producer Joachim Ernst Berendt recorded several records with Baden Powell, which received attention in Europe . His record " Tristeza on Guitar " was also internationally successful in 1966. In 1967 Berendt brought him to the Berlin Jazz Days . This appearance marked the beginning of a successful career in Europe. In 1970 the " Baden Powell Quartet" undertook their first tour of Europe and Japan.

Numerous records releases showed a experimenting and improvising musician who also Baroque - modulations to his synthesis of samba and jazz did involve. The result was recordings of high musical value, which represented a fusion of Afro-Brazilian and European musical culture. The collaboration with Berendt ended in 1971.

The influence of jazz remained, but the Brazilian roots in his music began to dominate his records. The virtuoso mixing of styles is what makes his early records so attractive. Baden Powell gained worldwide recognition as one of the world's best acoustic guitarists .

The extensive tours and nightlife took their toll on the sensitive guitarist in the mid-seventies. Baden Powell became seriously ill from his uncontrolled alcohol consumption, and his artistic creativity deteriorated. The public appearances and recordings became rarer. In 1983 he moved to Baden-Baden with his wife Silvia and his two sons and lived there in seclusion for a few years.

The family coexistence brought calm and balance into his life. He started performing again. With the solo concerts in Europe, he followed up on earlier successes for a short time. His playing became calmer and more concentrated, and the compositions of other Brazilian artists increased in his concert repertoire, to whom he showed the recognition that he had been denied for a long time at home.

After five years of retreating to the Black Forest and releasing three records: Felicidades , Live 1982 and Brani Rari e Inediti , he returned to Brazil and released the album Rio das Valsas in 1988 , which was characterized by a great guitaristic atmosphere, maturity and density. The record looks like a declaration of love for his homeland and his instrument. He preferred to play guitars from the Hopf workshop .

His musical productivity increased again. He gave concerts regularly and released some notable recordings. Until the last months of his life he devoted himself incessantly to new projects. In May 2000, Baden Powell recorded one of his last albums - "Lembrancas" (Memories), the late work of a great master of the Brazilian guitar.

He also devoted himself to the musical education of his sons Philippe Baden Powell de Aquino (piano) and Louis Marcel Powell de Aquino (guitar), both of whom work professionally as musicians in Brazil and Paris and have published their own records and compositions.
