Roberto Flores-Bermúdez (born August 14, 1949 in Tegucigalpa ) is a Honduran politician and diplomat . At times he was the Honduran Foreign Minister.

Life

He was born to Agripino Flores and Alicia Bermúdez . Roberto Flores-Bermúdez graduated from the Universidad National Autonoma de Honduras in 1972 with a degree in law . From 1972 to 1977 he worked for the Central America Bank for Economics Integration .

In 1977 he entered the diplomatic service of his country. From 1977 to 1981 he was first secretary in the Honduran Embassy in London in the United Kingdom . During this time, from 1979 to 1981, he completed studies on international economic relations and maritime law at Queen Mary College in London. From 1981 to 1983 as a consultant at the Embassy in Washington, DC in the USA . 1983/1984 he was Deputy Representative of his country to the United Nations in New York City . This was followed by a position as protocol director in the Honduran Foreign Ministry in Tegucigalpa from 1984 to 1986 and then from 1987 to 1990 as director for foreign policy.

In 1990 he became Honduras Ambassador to the United Nations in New York. He held this position until 1992. In 1991/1992 he was Vice President of the General Assembly of the United Nations , and in 1993 chief negotiator in Guatemala City in the framework of the Central American Peace Process. From 1994 he took over the function of the Honduran Ambassador in Washington, DC in the USA until he moved to London as Ambassador in 1998. He led the diplomatic campaign that resulted in Honduras being given a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 1995 . He was also instrumental in the decision to participate Honduran troops in the UN mission MINURSO .

From February 1999 to 2002 he was Foreign Minister Honduras. During his tenure, he was also responsible for coordinating the reconstruction work after the destruction caused by Hurricane Mitch . In 2002 he chaired a committee of the Organization of American States on the situation in Haiti .

From 2002 to 2006 he worked as an ambassador in Germany . In 2006 he moved back to the USA as the Honduran ambassador. In September 2012 he took over the office of Honduran Ambassador to the European Union . At the same time he was ambassador to Belgium , Luxembourg , the Netherlands , Sweden , Iceland , Norway , Finland , Denmark , Estonia , Latvia , Lithuania and to institutions in Geneva .

He represented Honduras at the International Court of Justice in The Hague and was a member of the Luso-American Hispanic Institute of International Law in El Escorial , Spain . Flores-Bermúdez worked as a lecturer, particularly on Central American issues, at various institutes and universities in Sweden, the USA, Honduras, Israel , Taiwan , France , Guatemala and Germany.

Flores-Bermúdez has been registered as a member of the Honduran Bar Association since 2001, and as a public notary from August 2017 .

He married Laura Eloisa Henríquez on February 24, 1973 and has a son and a daughter. In addition to Spanish , he also speaks English and largely French . He also has a basic knowledge of German .
