Herman Roelstraete
Herman Jozef Roelstraete (born October 20, 1925 in Lauwe , West Flanders , † April 1, 1985 in Kortrijk ) was a Belgian composer , singer , organist , teacher , conductor and music historian .
Education
In 1942 he began his studies at the Interdiocesaan Hoger Instituut voor kerkelijke muziek , today's Lemmens Institute in Mechelen , Belgium . There he studied harmony with Henri Durieux , Marinus de Jong piano and counterpoint , Flor Peeters organ and Jules Van Nuffel choral conducting and musical aesthetics. The first composition, Kleine triptiek opus 1, was written for orchestra. In 1946 he finished his studies at the Lemmensinstitut with great success. He then continued his studies at the Royal (Music) Conservatory in Brussels from 1946 to 1950. There he graduated with first prizes for singing with Maurice Weynandt , counterpoint with Marcel Poot and organ with Paul de Maleingreau . In 1957 he began studying dodecaphony with Mátyás Seiber . In 1969 he became a lecturer in harmony at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels .
Professional background
From 1944 to 1952 he was the conductor of the Kortrijkse Sint-Jozefskoor , a religious male choir that also performs folk songs. He led other choirs and orchestras. From 1948 to 1950 he was the conductor of an ensemble of students and lecturers at the Kortrijk Conservatory. In 1950 he founded the Westvlaams Kamerorkest and conducted it until 1959. From 1952 to 1957 he was the conductor of the Royal Choir and Orchestra Association Peter Benoitkring in Izegem . In Harelbeke he founded the mixed choir Reuzegom (1953) and was its conductor until 1963. As a result of a course in Gregorian chant at the Music Academy in Izegem, he initiated the establishment of the Scola Cantorum Cantemus Domino, which he assisted in an advisory capacity. He was also the conductor of the West-Vlaams Symfonieorkest , the chamber orchestra that was expanded for this purpose. In 1961 he was the founder of the Pierre de la Rue Chamber Choir, which he also conducted until 1963.
In 1947 he became a singing teacher at the Peter Benoit Municipal Music School in Harelbeke . In 1950 he became director of the Vrije Muziekacademie in Izegem and made pioneering changes during his tenure there, giving up this position in 1977 for health reasons. In 1950 he won the Prix Arnold for organ at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels . Subsequently he also worked as a concert organist.
