Roger John Liddle, Baron Liddle (born June 14, 1947 in Carlisle , Cumbria ) is a British politician of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Labor Party , who has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2010 .

Life

After visiting the Carlisle Grammar School graduated Liddle one Studied History and Management at Queen's College of the University of Oxford . He began his political career in local politics and was from 1971 to 1976. for the Labor Party member of the city council of Oxford , and most recently from 1973 to 1976 its deputy chairman. In 1981 he left the Labor Party and switched to the newly founded Social Democratic Party, of which he was a member of the National Committee between 1981 and 1986. During this time he represented the SDP from 1982 to 1986 as a member of the council of the London Borough of Lambeth .

After the dissolution of the SDP, he returned to the Labor Party and was a member of the party's campaign for electoral reform and the Labor Movement for Europe . After returning to the London Borough of Lambeth Council between 1994 and 1995, Liddle served as Special Advisor to Prime Minister Tony Blair on Europe between 1997 and 2004 . After completing this position, he moved to Brussels in 2004 as special advisor to the new President of the European Commission , José Manuel Barroso , and held this position until 2007.

Liddle, who was Chairman of Cumbria Vision between 2007 and 2010 , was raised to the British nobility as a Life Peer with the title Baron Liddle , of Carlisle in the County of Cumbria, by a letters patent dated June 19, 2010 . Shortly thereafter took place 21 June 2010 on its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords he belongs to the Labor Party faction .

Lord Liddle, who is also committed to the left-liberal think tank Progressive Center , has been Parliamentary Director ( Whip ) of the opposition Labor Group since 2011 and, since 2012, his party's European spokesman in the House of Lords. He is also currently chairman of the Policy Network and Communications Ltd. think tank.
