Roger Neumann

Roger Neumann (born January 3, 1941 in Minot (North Dakota) ; † November 28, 2018 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz musician ( baritone saxophone , bass clarinet , arrangement , composition ).

Live and act

Neumann grew up in Spencer (Iowa) and initially learned the soprano saxophone; He had lessons from his father Hugo Neumann, who played the trombone and saxophone as a professional musician. After studying at the Berklee School of Music , where the first recordings were made around 1965 ( Jazz in the Classroom, Vol. X ), he worked with Woody Herman , with whose big band he appeared at the Monterey Jazz Festival . From the late 1960s he played with the Ray Allen Orchestra, Bob Crosby , Buddy Rich ( Keep the Customer Satisfied , 1970), Ray Charles , John "Terry" Tirabasso and the Los Angeles City College Jazz Band led by Don Menza . In 1975 he founded the Roger Neumann's Rather Large Band ; a first album was created in 1983 for Seabreeze Records. Neumann's band also appeared on This Is My Lucky Day , a Grammy- nominated album by his wife Madeline Vergari Neumann.

As an arranger, composer and studio musician , Neumann worked in Los Angeles a. a. with musicians like Michael Bublé , Ray Anthony , Mel Tormé , Bill Elliott, Ralph Carmichael , Scott Whitfield and Barbara Streisand . He has also written arrangements for Buddy Rich, Count Basie , Benny Carter , Ray Charles, Anita O'Day , Les Brown and The Beach Boys ; he was also active in the Los Angeles Jazz Society . As a music educator, Neumann worked in the Jazz Goes to School program in Eagle County. The LA Jazz Society named him Educator of the Year. Most recently he worked on Phil Norman's album Then and Now: Classic Sounds and Variations of 12 Jazz Legends (2017). In the field of jazz he was involved in 54 recording sessions between 1965 and 2016, most recently with Katie Thiroux ( Offbeat , among others with Ken Peplowski ). Neumann appeared as a musician in the films La Bamba , My Favorite Year and For the Boys ; he also appeared on the soundtracks of the films Three Men and a Little Lady (1990) and Mumford .
