Career

Jelen, who starts for SSK Velenje, made his international debut at the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA 2015 in Eisenerz , but was only able to occupy the lower places. It was around eleven months before his next international appearance before he competed in the Alpencup for the first time in Oberwiesenthal in mid-January 2016 , but clearly missed the points. In the following years he competed regularly in the competition series of the OPA , which served as an important benchmark for juniors. Although the results were hardly satisfactory at first, he was nominated for the Slovenian squad at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2017 in Park City . There he was used in all three decisions of the Nordic combined athletes, but according to his previous performances he was far behind the top. A week later he made his debut in Eisenerz in the Continental Cup , where he remained pointless. In his Grand Prix debut in Planica at the end of September 2017 , he also clearly missed the points. After celebrating his first Alpine Cup victory in Winterberg at the beginning of September 2018 , a few weeks later he also won his first points in the Grand Prix at the highest level with a 27th place in Planica . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2019 in Lahti , he ran under the top thirty in both the individual according to the Gundersen method and in the sprint and was also fifth with the team. A few days later, together with Marjan Jelenko , Ožbej Jelen and Vid Vrhovnik, he just missed the podium in the Continental Cup as fourth in the team competition in Eisenerz .

In summer 2019, Jelen was part of the Slovenian team in the first mixed team competition in the Grand Prix in Oberwiesenthal , but together with Vid Vrhovnik, Ema Volavšek and Silva Verbič he was only able to achieve ninth and penultimate place. In the further course of the Grand Prix Jelen ran three times into the points and finally finished 55th place in the overall standings. In mid-December 2019, Jelen started the winter in Park City in the Continental Cup , where he was able to draw attention to himself with seventh place in the mass start. On December 21, 2019, he made his debut in the World Cup in Ramsau , finishing 37th. At the end of December 2019, Jelen became Slovenian champion in Planica. After further unsuccessful attempts in the World Cup, Jelen faced the competition again in the second-rate Continental Cup from mid-January. He achieved his best result of the season with fifth place in the Gundersen singles in Planica. He was able to confirm this performance at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2020 in Oberwiesenthal. In the final sprint against Gaël Blondeau he only missed the bronze medal by a fraction of a second. In addition, he was eighth in the team and in the first mixed team competition. He finished the season in 17th place in the Continental Cup.
