Roland Härdtner (born March 27, 1964 ) is a German marimba player, soloist for stick playing , timpani and percussion . Since 1993 he has been the principal timpanist and drummer of the Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim .

Life

It was not until the age of 20 that Härdtner began his musical training at the Baden Conservatory in Karlsruhe . When he began his studies (1985–92) at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf , he concentrated on performing his own interpretations of renowned concert literature, such as: B. the Concerto pour Marimba, Vibraphone et Orchester by Darius Milhaud , on the processing of music of the Western culture for his instruments. To this day, he has neither committed himself to individual epochs of music literature nor to certain stylistic ways of playing. In addition to his orchestral work, he has established himself as a soloist in the baroque marimba , vibraphone and xylophone since the 1980s. In the meantime, his repertoire with hundreds of works, especially in the area of mallets arrangements, is considered unique worldwide.

The discography of Roland Härdtner documented this with previously twelve CD productions on which he as a soloist with musical styles of world music over pop and jazz , music of the Baroque and Romanticism , on the Vienna to modern classical and contemporary music can be heard . During these recordings he worked with the internationally renowned Djembé player Amadou Kienou from Burkina Faso , the Württemberg Philharmonic , the Baden-Baden Philharmonic, the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra and the Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim , the major label EMI and various other record labels such as z. B. Virgin Classics, ebs, RBM and broadcasters such as SDR Stuttgart and SWR Baden-Baden worked together.

One focus of his previous work at the turn of the millennium has been the examination of the musical work of Johann Sebastian Bach with arrangements of over 40 compositions by the old master. The CD Badinerie from 2000 Härdtner shows in his interpretations of a high adherence to the text on. In complete contrast to this, the jazz arrangements of his quartet Swinging Mallets on the CD AIRevolution, which was released in 2001, are based on the harmonic structure of Bach's original in addition to a few quotations .

Härdtner's transcription of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No.1 by Philip Glass for marimba and vibraphone, which he published on his CD Virtuos Mallets in 2010 with the permission of the composer and his publisher Dunvagen Music Publishers, received special international attention .

In addition to arrangements for his instruments, Roland Härdtner also provides recordings of original works composed for the stick plays, which, thanks to the close collaboration with the composers, have a kind of reference character. An example of this is the probably most successful marimba concert of the musical literature Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra No.1 by the Brazilian Ney Rosauro from 1986, which was also recorded on the Virtuos Mallets CD by Härdtner and by the composer as "... one of the best performances of my concert that I have ever heard."
