Roland Köster (chemist)

Roland Köster (born August 6, 1924 in Frankfurt am Main ; † June 12, 2009 ) was a German chemist who did significant work in the field of coal chemistry , the organic compounds of aluminum and the organic compounds of boron .

Life

Family, military service and studies

As the son of the businessman Joachim Köster and his wife Liselotte Fraenkel, he attended elementary school in Heidelberg from 1930. At the age of four he lost his father, who suffered from a serious illness from the First World War . His mother then married the public prosecutor Hans Anschütz. Towards the end of 1933 he moved with his family to Offenburg , where he attended the humanistic grammar school from 1934.

He obtained his Abitur in March 1942 in order to then come to the Reich Labor Service . From January 1943 he served in the Wehrmacht , where he was taken prisoner by the British in September 1944. He was released from captivity in April 1946. He then immediately began studying chemistry at Heidelberg University . He passed the pre-examination to become a qualified chemist in April 1948, and in June 1949 the main oral examination to become a qualified chemist.

Diploma and PhD

After creating the thesis entitled to methylation of malic acid with diazomethane at Otto Theodor Schmidt he received on 12 February 1950, the diploma as a chemist. He then took up his doctorate with Schmidt on the subject of benzylation reactions with phenyldiazomethane and benzyl chloride . Karl Freudenberg participated as co-referee . In July 1951 he was able to take the Dr. rer. nat. to lock.

Work at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research

In 1952 he started working for Karl Ziegler at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr in the field of organic compounds of aluminum (organoaluminum chemistry). From 1955 he began independent research on organic compounds of boron, with which he did pioneering work in the field of organoboron chemistry. In this sector, his working group achieved worldwide recognition for this work.

Appointment as professor and areas of work

In 1969 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Institute. The following year he became a lecturer at the University of Vienna . The University of Vienna appointed him associate professor in 1978.

In the following years further work was carried out in the fields of the development of further reagents for hydroboration , dialkyl borylation, boron aldol chemistry, the chemistry of carboranes and the heterogeneous atomic compounds of boron. Until his retirement in 1992 he was involved in more than 150 domestic and foreign patents for inventions.
