Roland Martin (archaeologist)

Roland Martin (born April 15, 1912 in Chaux-la-Lotière , Franche-Comté , † January 14, 1997 in Fixin , Burgundy ) was a French classical archaeologist.

Martin studied classical studies from 1934 to 1938 at the Sorbonne and the École normal supérieure . From 1938 to 1946 he was a member of the École française d'Athènes . From 1936 to 1971 he taught at the University of Dijon , since 1956 as a professor. From 1965 to 1980 he was directeur d'études at the École pratique des hautes études and from 1971 to 1980 professor of Greek archeology at the Sorbonne .

He was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and from 1958 to 1980 the Center national de la recherche scientifique , from which he was honored with a gold medal in 1981 .

Martin's research focus was on the architecture and urbanism of ancient Greece. On this, but also on ancient Greek art in general, he wrote several overview works. He carried out excavations on the island of Thasos .
