Rolf Gerich (born July 4, 1928 in Friedrichshafen ; † February 24, 2013 ) was a German administrative officer and local politician .

Life

As a teenager, Gerich still fought as a soldier in World War II and was taken prisoner.

After returning home in 1945, he began training at the city administration of his home town of Friedrichshafen, where he worked until 1951. After several positions in smaller communities in the Tettnang district, he worked in the Ravensburg district office and as Albert Sauer's closest employee at the Ravensburg city administration . In 1961 he moved to the city administration of the neighboring town of Weingarten (Württemberg) as a city caretaker , where he was also responsible for the municipal utilities and the municipal hospital.

When a merger of Weingarten with the neighboring town of Ravensburg was planned during the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg , Gerich, who was now mayor of Weingarten under Lord Mayor Richard Mayer, was one of the resolute opponents of the project and represented the city in a lawsuit before the State Court of Baden- Württemberg . The court ruled on February 14, 1975 that the merger resolved by the state parliament was illegal and that Weingarten was allowed to remain independent. Gerich had previously accepted an offer to manage a hospital in Regensburg, but after the outcome of the process, which was surprising to many, decided to run for the successor to the sick Mayor Mayer.

In May 1975, Gerich was elected mayor of Weingarten as a non-party candidate with 80% of the vote. At first he was only able to take up office on a provisional basis, as a citizen had contested the election in court. In the fall of 1976, however, he was also officially mayor. In 1984, Gerich was confirmed in office with a large majority.

During the time of Gerich's tenure in Weingarten, the opening of the Alamannenmuseum Weingarten in 1976, the renovation of the city center with extensive new buildings at Löwenplatz, the construction of the road tunnel under the Münsterplatz, the renovation of the municipal hospital "14 Nothelfer", the establishment of the senior citizens' meeting place Haus am Mühlbach , the founding of the Weingarten youth council in 1985, the opening of the culture and congress center in 1989 and the establishment of partnerships with Blumenau (Brazil), Brest (Belarus) and Grimma (Saxony).

In 1992 Gerich retired and was made an honorary citizen of the city of Weingarten. His successor in office was Gerd Gerber .

Honors

Gerich rejected the award of the Federal Cross of Merit in protest against the increasing interference of state agencies in local self-government.
