Athletic career

Retschlag began to play football with the small company sports club Aufbau Börde Magdeburg . He played his first competitive game in the men's area for SC Aufbau Magdeburg at the age of 20 on September 17, 1961 in the league point game SC Aufbau Magdeburg - SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt (0-0) on a neutral place in Schkopau. He came on in the 75th minute for Knut Wittenbecher . It took three years for the 1.77 m tall Retschlag to celebrate his first major success. On June 13, 1964 , he stood as a left defender with the SC structure in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which the Magdeburg team won 3-2 over SC Leipzig . In the successful cup defense in 1965, Retschlag was missing in the squad, but made the first four of a total of six encounters in the following games for the European Cup Winners' Cup . In the 1966/67 season Retschlag had to play after the descent of Magdeburg, now playing as 1. FC Magdeburg, from the major league in the second-rate GDR league . With 26 appearances in the 30-game season, he contributed to the immediate resurgence. After a surprisingly good third place for a newcomer in the new Bundesliga season 1967/68, the Magdeburg team won their third cup in 1969. On June 1, 1969 , 1. FC Magdeburg defeated FC Karl-Marx-Stadt 4-0, and this time Retschlag was back in the game. He was able to crown his last season at 1. FC Magdeburg with his greatest sporting success. In 1971/72 the Magdeburg team became GDR champions for the first time, and Retschlag, who was now 31 years old, was able to contribute with three appearances. In a friendly game on June 10, 1972 Retschlag was adopted from the first division team of 1. FC Magdeburg.
