Roman Sanguszko (* 1537 ; † May 12, 1571 ) was a Lithuanian prince , general ( Feldhetman of Lithuania ), voivode and starost . He came from the Lithuanian magnate family of the Sanguszkos from the Sanguszko-Kowelski line and was the son of Prince Fiodor Sanguszko and Anna Sanguszko, née Dospotówna.

Life

Roman grew up at the court of King Sigismund II August and began a military career. In 1557 he received the Starostei of Żytomierz for his services . He fought from 1564 as part of the Muscovite-Lithuanian War 1558–1570 victoriously against Tsarism Russia (Tsarism Moscow) in the battles near Czaśniki in 1564 and 1567. In 1566 he became the voivode of Bracław (Voivodeship Bracław, today south-western Ukraine) by the Lithuanian Sejm ), followed by the state office of field hetman of Lithuania .

In the office of field hetman he fought many times against the tsarist Moscow and the Tatar troops of the Khanate of Crimea and the Nogai horde . Through his military and tactical skills he won some combat operations, such as the battles at Czaśniki mentioned above. A year later, in 1568, he conquered the Russian fortress Ułła, located in what is now Shumilina Rajon in Belarus . Despite personal reservations, he signed the legal act of the Lublin Union . In 1569 he smashed a Tatar invasion near Humań .

Roman Sanguszko was considered one of the best military leaders in the Jagiellonian era . For his services against the Muscovite Russians and the Tatar peoples, he received Rzeczyca as a hereditary fief.

Marriage and offspring

With his wife Aleksandra Sanguszko , née Chodkiewicz († 1570), he had three children:

  • Fyodor († 1591), Lithuanian prince, remained unmarried;
  • Teodora († 1598), from 1583 married to the voivod Stanisław Radzimiński , from 1591 with Prince Aleksander Proński and from 1596 with the voivod Andrzej Leszczyński ;
  • Aleksandra († 1602), from 1577 married to Prince Janusz Zasławski ;
