Rome: Total War: Alexander is the second add-on for the strategy game Rome: Total War from 2004. It was developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega in 2006. A MacOS version of Feral Interactive was released in February 2014, a standalone app for iPad (also developed by Feral ) was released on July 27, 2017.

The add-on addresses the campaigns of Alexander the Great . The player takes on the role of the Macedonian king and tries to develop his kingdom into a world power.

Gameplay

General

The Persian Empire at the time of Alexander

In Alexander the player takes control of the kingdom of Macedonia at the time of Alexander the great and tries to expand its influence by military means. The game is divided into a turn-based and a real-time game mode. The turn-based part of the game takes place on a campaign map, on which the player controls the economic, political and military development of his nation through building buildings in cities, army movements, attacks, defenses or the use of agents. The real-time part is represented by the battles that arise when armies of rival nations meet. The player then takes control of an army and fights the opposing troops on the battlefield.

Innovations

Alexander includes bigger gameplay changes than the first expansion, Barbarian Invasion . The military part has come to the fore, the administration and expansion of one's own empire play only a subordinate role. The campaign is designed as a non-stop war of aggression, as the goal of the game is to conquer Persia within a certain time frame.

Factions

Unlike in Rome: Total War and Barbarian Invasion , the player does not have a free choice of factions, since only the Macedonians are playable. Another change is the abolition of diplomacy between peoples. The player is permanently at war with the other factions and cannot conclude any agreements with his neighbors.

Rome: Total War: Alexander was rated similar to the main game. It received very good meta ratings with 92 out of 100 points for Metacritic and 91.75% for GameRankings .

The editors of the German magazine PC Games praised the ability of artificial intelligence on the world map. In tactical combat, however, this suffered from failures. It is criticized that the innovations were overall sparse.

Steve Butts from IGN criticized in his assessment that the campaign was designed too one-dimensional and that it lacked variety. Graphically, however, the title would have improved.
