Rosina Ferrara
Rosina Ferrara (* 1861 in Anacapri on the island of Capri ; † November 7, 1934 in Queens , New York City ) was an Italian model and muse .
Life
Rosina Ferrara was a daughter of the vegetable farmer Bartolomeo Ferrara and her mother is said to have been a descendant of the privateer Barbarossa . Their exotic appearance fascinated the artists from the end of the 19th century .
The painter John Singer Sargent came to the island of Capri for the first time in 1878 and met the 17-year-old Rosina Ferrara through the painter Frank Hyde. For Sargent, she represented a type of feminine beauty that he admired to a particular degree. In the 1880s she was the mistress of the Belgian painter Alfred Stevens and gave birth to two daughters. In 1891 Rosina Ferrara married the artist George Randolph Barse (1861–1938) from Detroit in Rome . The couple later lived in New York City, where they died in 1934 after suffering from long-term cancer . Her husband committed suicide three years after her death.
