The rust-bellied rapier wing ( Campylopterus hyperythrus ) is a species of bird from the hummingbird family (Trochilidae) that is found in Venezuela , Guyana , and Brazil . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern . The species is considered to be monotypical .
features
The rust-belly epee wing reaches a body length of about 10.4 to 12 cm and a weight of about 4.5 to 7 g. The male has a black straight bill with a light base on the lower mandible. The top shimmers bronze-green with a reddish tint. The head is greener with a white spot behind the eye. The underside is completely cinnamon in color. The shaft of the outer three hand wings are thicker and flattened. The four central control feathers are golden bronze, the outer cinnamon-colored red-brown. On the underside, the tail appears completely red-brown. Females are similar to males, but they are slightly smaller. Young birds are similar to adult birds.
Behavior and nutrition
The rust-bellied rapier wing draws its nectar and a. of flowering trees and epiphytes . Small arthropods are also one of its food sources. He hunts these in the undergrowth and the middle strata in the forest. It is considered to be a distinctly territorial hummingbird on flowers compared to conspecific conspecifics, but also other hummingbird species . With his strong loyalty to his location, he persistently defends his resources. Mostly he travels alone, but up to 20 individuals have been observed on a single tree at the same time.
Vocalizations
The song of the rust-bellied epee wing consists of a long series of even, individual sounds that we spik ... spik ... spik ... sound and are emitted at a frequency of approx. 0.7 to one tone per second. He also makes a rather nasal, single, troubled squik tone, which he sometimes doubles.
Brood
Little more is known about the breeding biology of the rust-bellied rapier wing than that it probably builds its nest two to three meters above the ground.
distribution and habitat
The rust-bellied epee wing prefers scrub on the peaks of the Tepuis , rock-inhabited highland biome . evergreen tepui forests as well as the higher mountain forests, especially with many black- mouthed plants or Clusiaceae . Here it moves at altitudes of 1000 to 2050 meters.
migration
The rust-bellied epee wing is commonly regarded as a resident bird . In some places, however, there can be dramatic flight, which is probably related to the seasonal availability of food sources. However, more precise information on migration behavior has yet to be researched.
Etymology and history of research
The first description of the Ferruginous sword blade was made in 1849 by Jean Cabanis under the scientific name Campylopterus hyperythrus . The type specimen collected Moritz Richard Schomburgk on Mount Roraima . In 1827 William Swainson introduced the new genus Campylopterus . This word is derived from the Greek »kampylos καμπύλος « for »curved, curved« and »-pteros, pteron πτερο « for »-fluted, wing«. The species name »hyperythrus« is a Greek word formation from »hypo ὑπο « for »below, below« and »erythros ὑπο « for »red«.
