List of grape varieties

Rotberger ( Vitis vinifera ) is a red wine variety . It is a cross between Trollinger (Schiava grossa) and Riesling , which Heinrich Birk achieved at the Geisenheim research station in Rheingau in 1928. The information provided by the breeder about the parents of the cross has been confirmed by DNA analysis in the meantime.

The new breed obtained plant variety protection in 1969 and was entered in the list of varieties in 1971. The vigorously growing vine forms strong stinging shoots , which makes it susceptible to powdery mildew (Oidium). It needs deep, fine-grained, not too dry soils, blooms and ripens late. It produces strong, Trollinger- like, but full-bodied, fragrant, fruity wines of light red color. It is also considered a good variety for making rosé wine . The wine mainly plays a role as a blend and for the production of red sparkling wine .

Small growing areas totaling only approx. 18 hectares are located on the Ahr , in the Rheingau , in Rheinhessen and on the Bergstrasse . In 2001, 25 hectares were surveyed. The vine is also found in Trentino , South Africa , New Zealand , Canada and the USA .

The grape variety must not be confused with the Rotburger , a synonym for Zweigelt .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy with white wool and is whitish-green in color. The slightly bronze-colored speckled young leaves (anthocyanin spots) are only slightly woolly hairy and green in color.
  • The medium-sized, dark green leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are five-lobed and have a medium-deep cave. The stalk bay is lyren-shaped open to overlapping closed. The leaf margin is serrated to a point. Compared to other grape varieties, the teeth are set medium wide. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The slightly conical grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The round berries are medium to large in size and bluish-red in color.

The Rotberger sprouts late and thus mostly escapes the late spring frosts. The winter frost resistance is moderately good. The vigorous variety can produce very good yields. Generally, however, also applies to Helfensteiner: if the vine is not pruned correctly (→ Training system ), there is a risk too high yields with the concomitant reduction in quality. The yield can be as high as 100-150 hectoliters / hectare.

It often reaches medium-high must weights . On average, the must weight is a few degrees Oechsle above that of the Blauer Portugieser .

The flowering time is late. The Rotberger ripens only a few days after the Gutedel and is therefore still considered to ripen early. It can be harvested shortly after the Portugieser. Rotberger is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
