The Rote Welle , also Rothe Welle , is a brook in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz .
course
It begins on the Mansfelder Platte north of Welfesholz and then flows north through a landscape cut to the Wipper near Sandersleben . Despite the fewer small tributaries, it quickly becomes richer in water, and the springs are also relatively strong despite their location on the plate. The cause could be water from the Harz Mountains , about 10 km away , that is passed through underground layers onto the plate. Halfway between the source and the mouth is the red wave desert of the same name .
Origin of name
The reason for the naming is unknown, but apparently does not refer to the stream, but to the source. The name is derived from the Old and Middle High German rōt (red). The second part Leite forth from Old Wella or the medium high German wave (boil, boiling; siedenen amsse, source). The Indo-European ancestral form of the word is wel (turn, roll).
