The red flax ( Linum grandiflorum ), also called Prachtlein , is a species from the plant genus flax ( Linum ).
description
The Red Lein is a one-year , herbaceous plant . With its multi-branched, but slender, upright growth habit, it reaches a height of 30 to 45 centimeters and a width of up to 15 centimeters. The gray-green leaves are densely packed at the base as well as in young leaves like roof tiles and are otherwise open, simple and ovoid-lanceolate.
The outermost branches of the plants form a loose panicle , at the end of which are the terminal single flowers. The flowers are large for a wild species, the flowering period is short.
The sepals are green, erect, rigid, membranous and hairy on the edge. They are lanceolate-awl-shaped and overlap each other like roof tiles. The petals are broadly inverted-egg-shaped, nailed and extremely finely serrated, from pink to scarlet red base color, dashed black on the nails and white inside.
The stamens are fused into a relatively long, cylindrical tube, the anthers are large. The ovary is oval and tapers to a thick pen , the scars are long, linear and fluffy.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Distribution and systematics
The plant is endemic to Algeria . It occurs there in the coastal region ( Muaskar , Oran ), so it is one of the most southern species of the genus.
Systematics
Linum grandiflorum was first described by René Louiche Desfontaines in 1798 . It belongs to the Linum section and thus belongs to the family circle of most European species.
use
Red flax is a valued ornamental plant. There are also garden forms with pink and purple flowers, the 'Rubrum' variety has dark purple flowers.
