Rowen Fernandez (born February 28, 1978 in Springs , Gauteng ) is a former South African - German soccer goalkeeper .

career

Fernandez began his career at Wits University . In 2001 he moved to the Kaizer Chiefs . At first he was only a substitute behind Brian Baloyi . He was bitten by a spider in April 2003 and was out for the remainder of the season. The following season he benefited from an injury to Baloyi. In his absence he fought for the regular place in the gate. In 2004 and 2005 he became South African champions with the club. In 2006 she won the ABSA Cup .

For the 2007/08 season Fernandez received a three-year contract with Arminia Bielefeld , which he signed on May 22, 2007, following his former coach Ernst Middendorp into the Bundesliga. Fernandez made his debut for the South African national team in August 2004 . The former junior international has since played 23 international matches. For the 2010 World Cup on home soil Fernandez, however, was in favor of Itumeleng Khune , Moeneeb Josephs and Shu-Aib Walters not called.

Fernandez received German citizenship in December 2010 . In January 2011 he moved to the South African top club SuperSport United in Pretoria .

Trivia

• Fernandez's nickname is "The Spider" (sometimes also "The Spider" or " Spider-Man "). There are two reasons for the name: on the one hand, his experienced goalkeeper colleague said in Fernandez's first year as a professional that he looked like a spider because he had few muscles and very long, thin arms and legs at the time, on the other hand, Fernandez was after one Spider bite almost died.
