Roy L. Wardwell

Roy Lee Wardwell (born October 29, 1874 in Penobscot , Maine , † October 17, 1949 Portland , Maine) was an American politician who was Maine State Auditor from 1917 to 1922 .

Life

Roy L. Wardwell was born in Penobscot, Maine to Leroy S. Wardwell (1844-1907) and Aroline C. Buker (1846-1910).

From a young age, at the age of 14, Wardwell went to sea and worked as a cabin boy, later as a seaman. He spent nine years at sea, then went back ashore and attended Portland Business College. From 1901 he worked as an accountant for the Cushnoc Paper Company in Augusta . He was also secretary of the Abnaki Club in Augusta. He later opened his own company, Wardwell & Co , a paper wholesaler.

As a member of the Republican Party , he was elected to the City Council of Augusta in 1909 and was later Treasurer of Augusta. Maine State Auditor from 1917 to 1922.

After retiring from his tenure as State Auditor in 1922, he joined the Gannett Publishing Co. newspaper company. A short time later, he became the company's managing director and treasurer. He held this position until he retired in 1935.

Roy L. Wardwell married Winnifred Cushman in 1900 and had a daughter and two sons. He died in Portland on October 17, 1949. His grave is in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
