Elbert D. Hayford

Elbert Daniel Hayford (born July 18, 1872 in Rockport , Indiana , † 1947 in Maine ) was an American lawyer and politician who was a Maine State Auditor from 1922 to 1940 .

Life

Elbert D. Hayford was born in Rockport, Indiana to Daniel Hayford and Virginia Ellen Brown. He attended Rockport High School and learned the trade of printer in 1890. He then attended Indiana University from 1893 to 1895 and then studied law with his brother-in-law Lane B. Osborn.

In June 1898, he volunteered for service in the Army in the Spanish-American War . His regiment consisted of recruits from Oklahoma, Arizona and New Mexico and was sent to winter quarters in Albany, Georgia. Since the services of this regiment were not required, it was dissolved in February 1899 and he was retired from the army. He then returned to work at Osborn & Hayford, Evansville, Indiana.

He moved to Maine and married Mary Eldridge Hayford (1872–1917) in 1901. The marriage remained childless. Two years after her death, he married Gertrude L. Boothby in 1919, with whom he had three daughters and two sons. The family lived in Farmingdale . He died in 1947. His grave is in Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner , Maine.

As a member of the Republican Party , he was a Maine State Auditor from 1922 to 1940.
