Rubidium carbide , actually rubidium acetylide , is a chemical compound of rubidium from the group of acetylides with the empirical formula Rb 2 C 2 .
synthesis
If acetylene is introduced into a solution of rubidium in liquid ammonia , a reaction occurs and a partially deprotonated acetylide RbHC 2 is formed . Slow heating in vacuo gives dark red crystals of rubidium acetylide.
properties
Rubidium carbide appears in two crystal structures , so-called polymorphs , which can also coexist. The hexagonal modification crystallizes in the sodium peroxide type, the orthorhombic in a new type similar to lead chloride . Here the acetylide dumbbells occupy the lead seats of the grid.
Reactions
Rb 2 C 2 decomposes when water is added to form acetylene and rubidium hydroxide . Diluted and concentrated hydrochloric acid decompose it in the same way; Rb 2 C 2 reacts explosively with nitric acid . It is not attacked by dry oxygen at room temperature, but burns in gaseous fluorine , chlorine , bromine or iodine . After slight heating , Rb 2 C 2 reacts with liquid sulfur , phosphorus , arsenic , silicon and boron . Rb 2 C 2 reduces the oxides of copper , iron and chromium . Heating a mixture Rb 2 C 2 with calcium in vacuum to form metallic rubidium.
