action

Ruby Lee Gissing, in her twenties and from Tennessee , moves to a tourist town in Florida to start a new life. There she got a job as a saleswoman in a shop. She meets Ricky Chambers, the son of her boss Mildred Chambers. She meets with him regularly. She later breaks up with him and meets with worker Mike McCaslin.

criticism

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that there are dozens of films about the growing up of a male protagonist - which one couldn't say if the main character was a woman; especially if the story is told with "intelligence and sensitivity". This makes the film “rare and welcome”. The portrayal of Ashley Judd brings out all aspects of the character played. It's a shame that Judd wasn't nominated for an Oscar for it.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of November 26, 1993 that the "wonderful", "breathtaking" and joyful film describes a young woman who finds true freedom by knowing what she wants to do and being able to do it to do. Ashley Judd gave one of the best performances of the year ("one of the very best performances of the year"). The subtle way in which Gissing's relationships are shown is refreshing.

Víctor Núñez won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival . Ashley Judd won the 1994 Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress . Víctor Núñez as director and screenwriter, Keith Crofford, Todd Field and Alex Vlacos were also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award.
