Rudolf Dentler (born December 18, 1924 in Pforzheim ; † September 2, 2006 in Ulm ) was a German goldsmith , artist and self-proclaimed "King of Ulm". He called himself "Rex the Last".

Life

Rudolf Dentler received his training at the art and factory schools in Pforzheim and Zurich and passed the master craftsman examination in 1952. From 1955 he lived as a freelance goldsmith in Blaubeuren , from 1968 in Ulm.

His Sophitia sculpture has stood in front of the Ulm Theater since 1999 , a copy of it at the Waganowa Academy in St. Petersburg . Other works can be found in museums in Berlin , New York , Tokyo and Moscow .

Every year on Oath Monday he gave his throne speech - an alternative oath speech - from a throne that he installed on the second floor of the facade of the goldsmiths in Ulm's Gerbergasse in 1989. He awarded a ring of honor with a gold cross to deserving citizens.

Dentler's grave is located in the main cemetery in Ulm . His family has set up a museum for the deceased with the works and writings of the “king”.

The stage and costume designer Timo Dentler is a son of Rudolf Dentler.
