Rudolf Erdmenger (born September 29, 1911 in Augsburg , † 1991 ) was a German mechanical and process engineer .

Life

Rudolf Erdmenger was born as the son of the production engineer of the Gersthofen works of the Farbwerke vorm. Meister, Lucius & Brüning AG , today Clariant . After graduating from high school, he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich . In 1932 he became a member of the Corps Vitruvia Munich. In 1935 he completed his studies with the academic degree of Dipl.-Ing. and took his first job in industry at Humboldt-Deutzmotoren AG in Cologne-Deutz. After about two years he switched to the Paul Leistritz machine factory in Nuremberg , where he worked on the development of kneading pumps for IG Farben in Frankfurt am Main . In 1939 he moved to IG Farben in the Wolfen plant near Bitterfeld . There he began to work with Walter Meskat on the development of the closely intermeshing twin screw extruder , for which a patent was applied for in 1944 . Erdmenger and Meskat were able to flee from the Soviet occupation zone to the Rhineland after the end of the Second World War . While Meskat continued his professional activity at Bayer AG in Dormagen , Erdmenger moved to the Leverkusen site , where in 1948 he took over the management of the high viscosity technology process group in the newly established department of applied physics , also known as AP for short , which he took over until his retirement 1976 directed.

Erdmengers inventions found in polycarbonate - compounding the Bayer Group application and were decisive for the technical and commercial success of this plastic. A later development was reactive extrusion in the production of paints and thermoplastic polyurethanes .

His studies, published in the journal Chemie Ingenieur Technik , are considered fundamental in the professional world. As a globally recognized specialist in high-viscosity technology, he was given the honor of editing two chapters for Houben-Weyl . He has received awards from the Society of Plastics Engineers and the University of Akron for his life's work .
