Rudolf Francl

Rudolf Francl (born April 12, 1920 in Ljubljana , Yugoslavia , † June 15, 2009 in Ljubljana, Slovenia ) was a Yugoslav opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

He studied singing at the Zagreb Music Academy until he had to return to Ljubljana because of the Second World War. There he continued his studies and appeared for the first time in 1944 (as Wilhelm Meister in the opera Mignon by Ambroise Thomas ). In the 1952/1953 season he was a soloist at the Belgrade Opera , then for three years in Zagreb . From 1956 to 1963 he sang at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf , where he was friends with the conductor Carlos Kleiber . He then returned to the Ljubljana Opera House.

Rudolf Francl was a brother of the singer Ivan Francl (1907–1987).

Recordings

Rudolf Francl can be heard in the 1958 recording of the opera Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss under the direction of Karl Böhm (re-released in 2002 on 3 CDs, Deutsche Grammophon 463 668-2).
