Rudolf Großmann (painter)
Rudolf Wilhelm Walther Großmann , also Grossmann , (born January 25, 1882 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † November 28, 1941 ibid) was a German painter and graphic artist .
Life
Rudolf Großmann grew up in an artistic milieu. His grandfather was the Baden court painter Wilhelm Dürr , his mother a portrait painter . He initially studied medicine and philosophy in Munich from 1902 to 1904 and then went to Paris for five years , among other things as a student of Lucien Simon . There he devoted himself at first, under the influence of Paul Cézanne , the landscape painting . With Jules Pascin he traveled to Belgium and Holland. Further study trips took him to northern and southern France and to Vienna, Budapest and Stockholm.
In 1910 he stayed in Berlin for a while and then traveled on - partly with his friend Hans Purrmann : to the Engadin , to Munich, to the Tegernsee , to Italy.
After his return to Germany, Großmann lived in Berlin and from then on worked as a graphic artist, a. a. with book illustrations and portraits of celebrities, the latter appeared in Simplicissimus , among others . In 1928 he became a professor at the Berlin Art School. Großmann was a member of the Berlin Secession and the German Association of Artists .
After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he was deposed as a professor in 1934 and retired to Freiburg. Großmann's works were defamed as "degenerate" by the National Socialists. In 1937 three of his works were shown in the Nazi propaganda exhibition Degenerate Art , and 206 of his works were confiscated.
