Rudolf Hoffmann (historian)

Rudolf Hans Bernd Hoffmann (born September 12, 1889 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † December 31, 1958 in Flensburg ) was a German historian and university professor .

Hoffmann was the son of the writer and general secretary of the Weimar Schiller Foundation Hans Hoffmann and attended the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium Weimar until his Abitur in 1909. He studied German, Romance studies, history, geography and philosophy in Heidelberg, Berlin and Freiburg (Br.) from 1909 to 1914 and received his doctorate in Heidelberg on the liberal Georg von Vincke as Dr. phil. In World War I he served from August 1914 to November 1918, most recently as lieutenant d. R. After the war he completed teacher training and legal clerkship in Flensburg and Husum . He then taught at the Mürwik Naval School until 1927, then for a year as a teacher in Lauban and Frankfurt am Main at the Victoria School . On April 1, 1936, he became a lecturer, then professor of history and its methodology at the Hanover University for Teacher Training . In 1937 he presented a collection of letters from the First World War by German soldiers in the field , which were published several times. During the Sudeten crisis in 1938 he was drafted, also from 1939 to 1940 and from 1943 to 1944. He then went back to the Goethe School in Hanover, but moved to Flensburg in September 1945. Because of difficulties with denazification , he stopped teaching. In 1933 he joined the NSDAP and was a leader of the NS-Lecturer Association in Hanover .
