Rudolf Opitz (paleontologist)

Rudolf Opitz (born January 3, 1890 in Radebeul , † July 16, 1940 in Kłobuck near Czestochowa ) was a German mineral and fossil collector in the Hunsrück schist and teacher in Kirschweiler .

Life

After completing his teacher training, Opitz worked as a teacher in Pirna from 1904 to 1910 ; first private tutor, then teacher in Fischbach , Oberhosenbach , from 1919 in Griebelschied and from 1924 main teacher in Kirschweiler.

In 1925 he started an extraordinary collection of fossils from the Hunsrück slate from the Lower Devonian . Some of his collection is exhibited today in the Hunsrückverein's game reserve at the foot of the Wildenburg . In 1932 he wrote a monograph on the fossils of the Hunsrück slate.

In recognition of his services to the investigation of fossils in the Hunsrück, he was chosen as an employee at the Palaeontological Institute of the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt am Main on September 24, 1938 . However, he only worked there briefly because a short time later he was called up as a soldier in World War II .

Rudolf Opitz was the author of a play about the Schinderhannes that promoted National Socialist ideology , which was performed on July 28, 1935 at the open-air theater of the “fortress” near Kirschweiler and then published. He also wrote the plays "In the Great War" and "Anno 1525".

Honors

Three fossil finds were named after Opitz:

In Kirschweiler, the square in front of the Hans-Becker-Halle was named after him and a plaque with his portrait was unveiled there.
