Rudolf Sperling (born July 29, 1888 in Heilbronn , † September 4, 1914 in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges ) was a German merchant in Heilbronn. His tomb in Heilbronn's main cemetery and the garden on Wartbergsteige that was laid out for him in 1911 are listed as historical monuments .

Life

He was the son of the wood merchant of the same name Rudolf Sperling (1859-1925) and his wife Emma, a daughter of the Heilbronn merchant Louis Link . The family belonged to the Heilbronn upper class, which during the founding period consisted predominantly of merchants and entrepreneurs who were often related to one another through marriage. Due to the marriages of his mother's sisters, Rudolf Sperling was also a nephew of the city doctor Alfred Schliz and the silver goods manufacturer Peter Bruckmann . He graduated from the Karlsgymnasium in Heilbronn and then completed his military service in 1907/1908 as a one-year volunteer with the Uhlan Regiment "King Wilhelm I." (2nd Württembergisches) No. 20 in Ludwigsburg. He studied chemistry in Heidelberg, Munich and Berlin and completed his doctorate at the end of his studies.

In 1911 he had Adolf Braunwald create a garden at the foot of the Heilbronn Wartberg .

At the beginning of the First World War , he went into the field as a volunteer in the Vosges . Letters to his parents dated August 31 and September 3, 1914 have been received, and on September 4 he died at Saint-Dié .

His body was cremated in Heilbronn on September 8, 1914 and then buried in the Sperling family grave in the Heilbronn main cemetery. Soon after, the family had a colossal grave monument designed by the sculptor Hermann Hahn , which shows sparrows in lancers uniform with a horse as a life-size relief sculpture. His face was realistically modeled from a photo. The grave monument was erected at a new grave site in Section 32 of the main cemetery, where his urn was reburied in autumn 1917.

His garden in Heilbronn was inherited by his cousin, the nurse and later city councilor Irmgard Link, who donated it to the Evangelical Church Community in 1975, which has now set up the senior citizens' garden in the listed complex .
