Rudolf Wimmer (born April 10, 1849 in Gottsdorf , † November 28, 1915 in Munich ) was a German portrait and court painter.

Rudolf Wimmer was born as the son of the teacher couple Franz-Xaver and Maria Wimmer. After his father's death in 1861, Rudolf was trained as an art carpenter and altar builder.

Thanks to his godfather, the melting pot manufacturer Franz Paul Kaufmann from Obernzell and a cousin of Rudolf, Eduard von Wolfanger, Rudolf was able to study at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich since October 24, 1868 . He was awarded the bronze medal of the academy and received a scholarship and a certificate signed by Moritz von Schwind . He then served in the army for a year. On March 2, 1871, he was presented with the Combatant Medal. He then continued his studies with Alexander Strähuber , Johann Georg Hiltensperger , Hermann Anschütz and Hermann Ziebland . He studied for another year at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and went on study trips to England , France , Holland and Belgium .

In 1877 he settled in Munich. He married and worked as a freelance artist. In 1881 he portrayed the Russian Count Eduard Iwanowitsch Totleben who was staying in Bad Reichenhall . The portrait brought him success.

At a Berlin art exhibition he showed the portrait of his wife, which caught the attention of the then Prussian Crown Princess. She ordered a portrait of her husband, who later became Kaiser Wilhelm II. Rudolf Wimmer was appointed to the Prussian court in 1888 and appointed court painter on November 19, 1890. He created around 70 to 100 images of emperors.

Rudolf Wimmer also received orders from the Bavarian royal house. He portrayed the Bavarian Prince Regent 37 times. On November 1, 1896, he was appointed "Royal Bavarian Professor".

In addition to the noble people, he also portrayed wealthy business people, also from the United States and South Africa .
