Falkenberg ruins

The Falkenberg castle ruins are the remains of a medieval hilltop castle in the municipality of Straß im Straßertale in the Krems-Land district in Lower Austria . The castle ruins are under monument protection .

location

The ruin is located in the valley of the Gscheinzbach at the southern end of the Manhartsberg .

history

A Rapoto von Valchenberch is mentioned around the middle of the 12th century. His descendants, Hadmar and Rapotto, were accused of being hostile to the Habsburg rulers and of mugging . While Hadmar fled to Bohemia , Rapoto defended the castle. The siege lasted from Michaelis (September 29th) 1299 until Rapoto's death in March 1300. The Duke showed mercy towards the Falkenbergers and gave them back their possessions, but the castle was razed. Possibly the chapel was excluded from this, since around 1365 a pastor was mentioned in Valchenberg. When the Falkenbergs died out in 1355, the Kapellers and Walseeers, as their heirs, were given permission to rebuild the castle, but this did not happen.

description

The castle is located on the edge of the market town of Straß, the center of which used to be near the castle, on a steep slope that offers natural fortification on three sides. Only a sparse remnant remains of the formerly imposing castle (forecourt 60 meters).

Say

When the Swedes came in 1645, many people withdrew to the ruins. Torstenson , the leader of the Swedes, sat down opposite the ruins on Pösingberg to lead the attack against the people who had fled here. He was just having his lunch when suddenly the Falkenberg defenders hit his stone table. He was so shocked by it that the knife and fork fell out of his hand. Torstenson could not explain where this unexpected attack was coming from and immediately ordered his men to withdraw.
