from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rumford Prize is a science award for physics . It is awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to scientists working in the United States for discoveries in the fields of thermodynamics and optics .

Although the Academy received a $ 5,000 donation from Count Rumford to establish the award as early as 1796 , the award was not first awarded until 1839. Today it is one of eight prizes awarded by the academy. According to the founder, the prize should be awarded every two years, but was in fact always awarded to one or more scientists at irregular intervals of one to several years. The last award ceremony took place in 2015. The award consists of a gold-plated silver medal.
