Ruprecht of Würzburg
Ruprecht von Würzburg (life dates unknown, 13th or 14th century), name variants: "Ruprecht von Wirzburg", "Robert de Wurtzbourg" and Latinized "Rupertus Herbipolensis" as well as in the work itself "Ruoprecht ein [von] Wirzburgaere [Wirzburg]", was a German poet best known for his short story in verse Two Merchants and the Faithful Housewife .
life and work
Hardly anything has been transmitted about Ruprecht as a person, the dates of his life are unknown and there is only one work by him in the form of a handwriting . Since he calls himself “a Würzburger” (“Ruoprecht ein Wirzburgaere”), for example in text passage 940 , as was customary in the Middle Ages , Würzburg will have been the city of his origin or his main place of activity. The poet "Ruprecht von Würzburg" should not be confused with the later provost of the same name (mentioned in the context of the Bishop of Bamberg , 1462).
His novella Two Merchants and the Faithful Housewife in verse is originally titled Von zwein Koufmannen or Von Zwei Koufman and is written in Middle High German . The 34 verses have different lengths and, like the only contemporary work ( Wigalois ) by Wirnt von Grafenberg , are written in three rhymes. Ruprecht von Würzburg is also classified in German mediaeval studies in the context of Michael de Leone (around 1350), a Würzburg protonotarius .
The motif of a woman's loyalty to be checked, processed in Two Merchants and the Faithful Housewife , was taken up as a theme by William Shakespeare in his play The Tragedie of Cymbeline from 1623.
