Rusidava in the course of the Dacian Limites

Fort Momoteşti (also Kastell Drăgăşanii , possibly identical to Rusidava ) is a presumed former Roman auxiliary troop camp in the area of today's district Momoteşti in the south of the city Drăgăşani in the district of Vâlcea , in the north of the Romanian region Little Wallachia . In ancient times it was part of the Limes Alutanus and administratively belonged to the province of Dacia inferior , later to the Dacia Malvensis .

location

On the Tabula Peutingeriana there is a location marker called Rusidava between Acidava and Pons Aluti . This marking was with the Fort Momoteşti resp. equated to its civilian settlement and is said to have had the task of protecting the Roman highway running parallel to the Olt . In today's settlement image , the site in question is located northeast of the Momoteşti district (city of Drăgăşani) on heathland around 1.5 km west of the Olt, in the Cetate and Pesteana corridors .

Archaeological evidence

The area as a whole has only been insufficiently archaeologically investigated. Tudor Dumitru kept mentioning it in the 1940s to 1970s, and Cristian M. Vlădescu carried out a smaller investigation in 1978. It is believed that it is an auxiliary fort. The size and dating are completely unclear, nothing is known about the occupation.

Rusidava: Drăgășani or Strejeștii de Jos?

For decades it was considered in Romanian archeology that the Momoteşti fort in Drăgăşani was identical to the Rusidava listed on the Tabula Peutingeriana. In 2002, however, a publication by Constantin Preda (numismatist, member of the Romanian Academy) and Aurelia Grosu (archaeologist) appeared, in which the hypothesis was put forward that Rusidava could be assigned to a recently made discovery in Strejeştii de Jos. There, around seven kilometers south of Drăgășani, extensive brick constructions were found along with items such as fibulae, ceramics and coins from the Hadrian era. The question of localization currently seems unresolved.
