The Izlaz-Racoviță Fort is a former Roman auxiliary fort on the territory of the municipality of Izlaz , Teleorman County , in the Romanian region of Great Wallachia .

location

In today's settlement image, the soil monument is on the eastern edge of the community, near the old church, east of the main road and west of the silted Racoviță brook in the "Cetatea Racovica" corridor . A large part of the former fort area is covered by the old cemetery. Today nothing is visible in the area, some of the findings were washed away by floods, or they were destroyed when the old cemetery was built. In addition, the western part of the camp was affected by the gradual expansion of the modern village. In ancient times, the crew of the fort probably had the task of monitoring shipping traffic on the Olt and land traffic on the Limes road that ran parallel to the river.

Archaeological evidence

Only the northwest corner of the former military camp is preserved. With some reservations, the warehouse could be interpolated to a size of 105 m by 75 m (corresponding to 0.79 hectares). A significantly larger extent is conceivable, since the eastern and south-eastern areas in particular were most severely affected by washings, so that the contours opposite to the northwest corner can no longer be traced. The fort was surrounded by a two- to three-fold wall / ditch system. Nothing is known about the troops stationed in Izlaz-Verdea.
